Dear Friends,
Americans are known for their generosity. With every tragic event our countrymen endure, including hurricanes battering Texas and the Caribbean, it is heartening to see such an outpouring of love. I'm sure you're praying, along with us, for people in Florida and the Caribbean islands.
Helping Hands is especially proud of Coach Dave’s Salt & Light Brigade, which takes teams of men to hurricane-torn areas, assisting with recovery efforts. Our son, Jared, is planning to join the Salt & Light Brigade team in Texas later this month.
Long before these latest hurricanes appeared on the radar, another ministry team was being formed. This Thrive Ministry team includes Christian women desiring to bless American missionaries on the front lines in remote Papua New Guinea. I am excited to be part of that team!
As I write, plans are being made to pour out Jesus’ love on (in some cases) bruised and battered missionaries who may have endured hurricanes of another kind. My heart longs to minister to tired and weary leaders who need encouragement and support.
"No one EVER comes all the way to PNG to care for us! You came to the ends of the earth to encourage us!"
This statement was made some years ago, when Thrive Ministry went PNG to bless missionaries there. Thrive asks the guests to register for only one Thrive retreat every 5 years, allowing others to sign up, if Thrive comes to their region of service more than once. This enables many missionary women to participate in the blessing of each retreat.
But with Thrive's new aftercare ministry, all missionary women who would like to connect with a Christian mentor back home, will be able to. I hope to be part of this exciting new development. Good things are happening!
I'm pleased to tell you we received close to $1000 in donations since our last letter. We're inching closer to our goal of $5000 every week, thanks to you!
Our hope is to pay all airfare charges on our credit card by September 21st, so we are praying and believing God will provide the needed funds.
Airfare alone is $3000 - to fly all the way to PNG and back. You see, it takes five separate flights (almost 36 hours of travel) to get from Maine to Papua New Guinea. The trip includes stops in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Australia, and PNG, before one last flight to our final destination.
Traveling through the International Date Line, we will skip a day on the way over, and enjoy 2 of the same day on the way back, with no night in between. I can't really wrap my mind around that one!
What I can do, is envision being Jesus’ hands and feet for leaders overseas.
Do you know anyone serving in PNG? If so, please invite them to sign up for the Thrive Retreat in October. Feel free to forward this email to your PNG missionary friends. They may simply visit www.thriveministry.org to learn more.
September 6th Financial Update: Goal is $5000
Still needed: $1330 more to pay for airfare
Three churches giving $400-500 or thirteen people giving $100 would help meet this goal.
Thank you for prayerfully considering what you can do to partner with Helping Hands Ministries.
Will you consider a special gift, today?
